We completed a temperature and fire monitoring system for all of Company G's floating-roof crude oil storage tanks in 2018. Before the full installation, the system was piloted on one tank for two years, from 2016 to 2018, to verify its stability.
Unlike the previous monitoring arrangement, the system requires no power or electrical signal cables in the tank area. A single fiber optic sensing cable provides automatic, round-the-clock coverage throughout the monitored area without blind spots.
The two-year pilot operated without malfunction or service interruption in the mechanical components, optical cable, system or monitoring software, supporting the decision to extend coverage to all tanks.
Functions include temperature, overheating and fire monitoring of floating-roof tanks; reliable operation compared with the existing FTLD system; long-life fiber optic sensing cables in place of FTLD cables; an installation structure that accommodates tank overhauls; monitoring at one-meter intervals on the tank roof; and alarm event transmission to the DCS using Modbus TCP.
